Veg growing in pots!

Hi,
im just getting started on my veg for the year but will be growing in pots/planters for at least the next couple of years. I’d like to buy something that will look nice on my patio and then replant with more decorative plants once I can start my veg garden.

can anyone recommend anything? I used a few plastic tubs last year in a smaller garden but would like something more permanent this year.

thanks.

  • A reliable and affordable solution is those big pots which would be fine for growing veg and can repurpose in a future garden. And they largely look inoffensive to my eyes and have a very wide shape which is great of you want to grow tomatoes or a few peppers or aubergines.

Larger the better, really.  Less watering and more space for roots, meaning healthier plants and more produce.  I had an EarthBox once (do a search), which looked nice and was really successful with the veg I had in it.  They are a bit expensive though, and I DIYed a bunch more (also searchable).. not as lovely to look at, and the plastic on the DIY ones went brittle and cracked after a few years.  Not the EarthBox one, that was fine.

I’ve used those ones mentioned in the link above by @amancalledgeorge. They work well, and I’ve had a good crops of carrots, runner beans and French beans in them plus a few salad leaf crops in between to make them really earn their keep😉
  • Last Spring when stores were largely closed, and planters and pots were hard to find online as there was so much demand, I made my own. I used some spare wood log panels (the sort used for low fencing) and other wood scraps I had and found for free online, to create two (approx) 1m x 45xm x 45cm planters. With a lick of paint I think they look rather smart! They're lined and given drainage holes, and now one is used for decorative plants and herbs, and other for veg (last year I grew a courgette, this year I'll be able to get a tomato plant and some beetroot in). Just a different thought to something 'off the peg'!
