Dahlia Tubers - Will They Grow?

This week I received the first of my orders of bulbs from a very well know Dutch plant seller and all the Dahlias I purchased have detached tubers, those that are left on the stem are either very small or shrivelled.
The photos I have attached are of the three different dahlias, the packaging.  For the photos all I have done is remove from the packaging!
My questions are - will they still grow? Is this what you’d expect to receive when paying £5 per tuber?
Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I wouldn't be happy if  I  paid £5 per tuber for these. However I think they will pop buds as long as they are firm.  Remember last year's stems are dead anyway so they should be ok

Thanks @Bjorn Dajoak, I am just not happy with what has arrived, if they were thrown in as a freebie then fine but not £15’s worth of plants!

I wouldn't be happy either! I would send them the photos and see if they will give you a refund or replacements.

I am sure they will grow, but as they don't have access to as much stored energy from the tubers, they might be slower/smaller and may need more feeding?

Don't forget that they grow from dormant buds on the stems. Unless there is some stem on the tubers they will not grow.

I would complain and maybe you will get a refund. In reality they will grow just fine and you're not really losing that much (just throw away the detached tubers). Please don't let any more tubers dislodge though!

The Loose ones won't grow. They must be attached to a stalk.

  • I'm surprised at that company, I've always had good products from them. I wonder if they got bashed about in transit??

@Crazybeelady no issues before. The box and packaging was in perfect condition.  The tubers could not have been damaged in transit, everything was perfectly packaged.

Not acceptable and more expensive than most.

I would be very annoyed about those.  Have a look in Wilco,  they’ve got some beauties and all only about one pound each. I have bought several before.

You could also get some seeds to sow in March,  by  the end of the year they would have made tubers as big or bigger than you’ve got there.
