Clematis Pixie problem

My little Pixie has only two very long stems. How do I get him to bulk up given he's group 1? I'm a novice  so wondering if there is a way to encourage more growth to make him bushier? I bought him to trail over a pot but the stems are about 3ft long and there are just tge two, so he looks very straggly!

If you prune it back a bit to just above a pair of leaves it should bush out and make new stems but do this after flowering this spring or you'll lose the flowers for this year.   Group 1 clematis flower on stems produced in the previous year.

Check the base of its pot to make sure no roots are escaping.  If they are, pot it on into a bigger pot using John Innes no 3 type compost.   Either way, give it a generous top dressing of slow release fertiliser for clematis, roses or tomatoes every spring and, between buds opening and flowering finishing, give it a weekly liquid feed of tomato food.  Do not let it dry out in hot, dry spells.

Clematis are hungry, thirsty plants but not difficult once you've grasped that and their pruning regime.

  • Thank you so much. That's a great help. Shlukd I prune back far on each stem? Down to about 12 inches ?  I was worried about pruning group 1 so this is very reassuring!
  • It's in a very deep pot - about 30 inches deep. Would good quality organic leaf mould be good for it?

Once it's flowered, yes, you can take it back but leave two healthy buds or pairs of leaves on each stem, just in case.

Leaf mould is a good soil conditioner but not high in nutrients so not much use to a clematis in a pot.   You'll need to do the top dressing every spring but I'd suggest checking for roots every autumn and potting up then so there's less risk of frozen roots over winter.
