Best time to plant out

cressercresser Posts: 26
Hi, I am new to gardening but I have just bought a Japanese Quince (Elly Mossel), and wondered when the best time was to plant it out. I live in South Birmingham and the nights are frosty right now, should I wait for the ground to warm up a little. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing it's in a pot? if so, there's no great urgency.
You could plant it now, they're hardy shrubs, but it looks like it'll be warming up a bit by next week, so you could wait a week.
So long as your soil isn't wet and claggy it'll soon settle-in.
It'll take a few more weeks until the soil starts to warm up.
    It's a lovely looking variety.

    Hi Pete.8
Thanks very much for your reply and advice, I do appreciate it. Yes, it is still in a pot, but I will take your advice and leave it until it warms up a little more. I am looking forward to seeing it develope. I wonder, are the flowers Bee friendly at all, and would the berries - or `fruit`, as the label states, be attractive to the birds, although there are thorns on it.
    Again, thankyou for the advice.

Yes the flowers are bee friendly :)
I used to have a similar one.
I only ever got a few small fruits on mine (it was planted in deep shade). I can't remember if the birds ate them or not. Birds know how to avoid thorns and prickles.
Quince jelly can be made, but I'm not sure if the ornamental variety of Quince is suitable for that.
    Good luck :)
