Blackberries

MeomyeMeomye Posts: 949
I have just purchased some young thornless blackberry bushes (Rubus Fruticosus 10cm pots) on a whim and have no idea what to do next! :/ Would it be possible to grow them in pots? Any advise on keeping these would be most welcome. t i a

They really need to be in the ground and trained against a fence etc. as they take a lot of room.  However, some will grow ok in large pots as long as you also build them some support.  Chris Bowers knows his stuff and has some info which may help:

@BobTheGardener, thanks for replying. I seem to have got carried away buying these as I was purchasing lots of other bits at the time! I was under the impression that they were a variety intended for pots. What sort of pot size do you think they would need as I don't really have anything to grow them against. :/ tia

Even in a pot they'll need a framework and it needs to be a big pot and good compost and plenty of watering.

@Obelixx thanks for reply. What would you say would be a good compost and pot size? If these are not doable I will pass them on, lesson learned not to be hasty!

HI @Meomye I would say use 60cm dia. pot (which will hold about 80 litres) and use a John Innes #3 loam-based compost.

Agree and don't forget to water it even when it rains.
