Is this lavender dead?

Hi there. Our lavender appears to be completely woody. Is there anything we can do or is it dead?

From the top picture I would say no, It does need a trim though. Don't go too far down into the woody parts or it will die. I would wait until end of the month in the event of frosts.

My lavender has become very leggy and woody.  On one gardening programme they claimed that it will grow back from older woody stems so I have cut mine hard back and await the results.  Nothing lost if it doesn't work as I was planning to rip it out and plant new anyway.  It's been in about 9 years.

You will already see tiny leaves along the lower parts of the twigs if it's going to sprout from there.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I agree that the growing season hasn’t started yet so hang on. They look young enough to still be good. I have a couple of Lavenders about 15 years old that are very leggy - one might have seen its last Summer, and I will sadly have to pull it out, but I did cuttings last year so there will be new bushes elsewhere.
My garden and I live in South Wales.

Alive and not too bad. Just cut them back as much as you can, without going into the old wood (leave at least a centimeter of leafy growth on all branches).
