Privet hedge - Ligustrum ovalifolium mould

I have an old large privet hedge. (It was well established when we moved here 23 years ago). Over the years the trimmings had clogged it up. So during 2020 I removed the dead wood and trimmings. There was a lot of green mildewy dust (not good when I breathed it in, but least I had a mask handy!) but it has looked more and more sick with leaves going brown and falling off from spring 2020. However I now have some tiny green shoots. Any advice what to do?
thanks, Linda

  • I should add my nearby small bay tree has also had it’s leaves go black and dry and then fall off (but no sign of the dry green mould)
  • So far as I can see, the privet looks normal and about to burst into life. Just losing some old leaves - they don't last forever. If the 'green stuff' is e.g. the greenish colour on the twigs in the final privet photo, it just looks like green algae, which harmlessly grows anywhere - tree trunks, fence panels, etc. I know it can be dusty when I've brushed fence panels prior to applying preserver. On plants, I just leave it.

Don't know about the bay. Is this all the leaves (not good), or just some of them?
  • Thank you Brunt. Maybe the privet is just getting old. In 23 years, it’s never shed all its leaves. Yesterday I pulled out more dead old wood, twigs and leaves (some had white mould). Hopefully now it has had 1 year of better airflow, it’ll bounce back to life.

re the bay bush, again lots of the leaves are going black and dry and falling off. Not bold yet. (Never done it before). Maybe I’ll do a separate post with pictures of it later.
