.......What Garlic?

Hi All - hope you are all doing ok during this challenging time.

I have always grown elephant garlic but would like to grow a 'proper' garlic now and so have done some research into a suitable replacement. When I shop in Tesco I buy this garlic shown below, and it fantastic - large juicy cloves easily peeled and tasty.

Any ideas what type they may be - they are large and sold in single bulbs - I do understand they all look the same as bulbs but I've researched and cant find any info about type.

Any ideas what they might be - I would like to grow them?

Cheers

Dan

No idea what the variety is but why not just take some of the cloves and plant them out. However many garlics are better planted out in the autumn but still worth giving it a go.

Does it say where it was grown? I've grown lots of different varieties and some years they have lovely fat cloves like that, but it seems to be more down to weather than variety. Your best bet is to get a type that is suited to your climate. If that is Spanish garlic, you'd be disappointed growing it in Scotland.

There are spring planting types but get a move on, they need to be in before the end of March.

Ok - I did think of that, I'm still a bit new to all this and I was always told not to just chuck garlic in as i might transfer disease - white rot is it? Not sure if that's right but its what i was told and i had a bout of something in my raised beds a few years ago and I'm terrified i may ruin it all, don't think it was white rot in the end...

I did look at the label and researched it online but it doesn't say where it was from. I thought country of origin was mandatory? Interestingly there are about 50 odd reviews in the Tesco website saying they are 'orrible and tasteless and from China - not sure how they found that out?

Try growing it in containers- 20-30cm depth is plenty.
Soft-neck garlic is, usually, planted in the spring, as raisingirl has already mentioned.  Moreover, it stores quite well too!
