Whats wrong with my Cherry Tree?
Hi All, hope your ok? Just got a question about my two year old Cherry Tree, it is covered in buds this year but I noticed a nasty gash on it yesterday, should I be worried? I have had my grease band round it so I don’t think it is Moth damage?

Is the lesion on the main trunk and was it where the grease band was tied? I don't think that will recover so you may have to prune the affected part off.

it looks to me as it the tree has been badly damaged at that point and the growth above it may not be viable.
If we could see a photo of the whole tree we could see your options... it may well be possible to cut the lead stem back and train future side shoots as a fan as shown here

I can’t see properly, but I would go for it as shown on the Ken Muir link ... I would start as shown at Fig. 33
but I wonder what @Mr. Vine Eye thinks ... he’s done more fruit training than I have. 😊
