Has anyone cut their grasses or perennials back yet?

How hard do you cut back the Gaura out of interest?

Yep, I've done nearly everything. Left the amistad until they start shooting, and the penstemons, as that seems to be the general advice for penstemons...

Perennials have been chopped and lawn has had it's second cut.  Looking back at my garden diary I've done it roughly the same time every year and not had a problem.  A lot depends on where you live further north and you would probably need to do it later.
Hi from Kingswinford in the West Midlands
  • Made a start on my grasses yesterday but there is still time for another Blast from the East so have only removed about 3/4 of dead top growth, leaving some protection, just in case. Started sorting out my dicentras as well. The wind was icy, same today so maybe err on the side of caution. New growth is appearing.

Have treated myself to an iris unguicularis which will need similar treatment, first flowers are opening. Gorgeous.
  • Correction. Not dicentras, should read dieramas.

@Joyce Goldenlily , do you completely cut back your dieramas? Mine are reasonably evergreen and I just go over them now and again pulling out the dead/brown leaves. Now I'm wondering if I've been doing it wrong.

@Wrigs21, if you look at the base of the Gaura  you can usually see new shoots appearing. I cut to just above them (but not yet !).

    Hi Anni

So first year in but here’s what mine look like, fairly chunky bases but no new growth. I know they can suffer the winter so not sure if they have made it through?

P.s. not sure why but my pics often come out sideways when upload!

There seems to be a problem with some photos loading sideways @Wrigs21, l've had problems earlier this week, but it's okay l've twisted round and l can see :) .
If you look right at the base (you might have to scrape the soil away a bit), with luck you may see tiny green shoots . I can't quite make out what that is around the base (stones? ), but you might want to clear around the base just to let light and air in. It very much depends on the weather you've had over the Winter, but hopefully you will be in luck.
