I did mine last weekend. I find the appearance of new buds inhibits my capacity for severe pruning so I just go for it on a dry Spring day. Mine have survived this treatment for years and every year gets in the way by Autumn as it grows so strongly.
From what I read, that is what we should take as a signal to get at it. Previous years I've just done it on the first suitable day, usually in mid Feb, much as steephill says, and I have to say i've not had any problems with doing so But i'm determined to try to do it 'right' this year It's my new leaf thing...

Good point. I think I was way too harsh when I trimmed my fuchsia early in the season and didn't leave it with much to lose.
