When deciding when to give this a severe pruning, should I go by the appearance of new buds or the time of year?
In London. Keen but lazy.

I did mine last weekend. I find the appearance of new buds inhibits my capacity for severe pruning so I just go for it on a dry Spring day. Mine have survived this treatment for years and every year gets in the way by Autumn as it grows so strongly.

Thanks @steephill. What do you mean inhibits my capacity?

I am just so grateful to see anything trying to grow that I can't bring myself to cut it down properly. Does not apply to brambles of course :D

Ok I know exactly what you mean now! It happens to me too. @steephill

Beware of frost. I tend to leave cutting back until a bit later in the year ever since a harsh frost wiped out all the new growth.

Itching to get at mine too,
but i'll resist for a couple weeks more I think...
Just another day at the plant...

The trouble is, the new growth will be here in a couple of weeks anyway

From what I read, that is what we should take as a signal to get at it.
Previous years I've just done it on the first suitable day, usually in mid Feb, much as steephill says, and I have to say i've not had any problems with doing so
But i'm determined to try to do it 'right' this year
    It's my new leaf thing...

Good point. I think I was way too harsh when I trimmed my fuchsia early in the season and didn't leave it with much to lose.
