Gazania

My years old gazanias. Have suffered in the cold snap. They are mostly clumps of rotting leaves but they're not dead as I can see the odd shoot   or green leaf.
I'm not sure how they actually grow so I'm wondering if it would be ok to cut them off at the ankles or should I leave them to avoid damaging the new shoots?

This one has slithered down the pages. So one more try😊Can anyone advise me? Is it like a bare root plant that will shoot from the roots or something else?

I've never grown perennial gazanias, but my feeling would be to remove the soggy rotten parts so they don't encourage rot in the rest.  If the new shoots are growing from below the "ankles" you could probably trim them low down, but not if the only green is from higher up the plant.  Maybe remove rotten parts and wait a bit??  Of course, I could be quite wrong.  Hopefully someone with more knowledge will post soon...

I didn't even know they were perennials, but they've been going for years. I don't think they like the damp. It might be that more than the snow wot did it. Unfortunately, I never remember to label which ones have the horrible inyerface colours. Maybe they'll be the ones that succumbed😉 @Liriodendron

That would be good... but if they were mine, it'd be the ones I liked best which snuffed it   :|

Ditto. They vary from leery to subtle and everything in between. Fortunately the stripey ones don't seem to be hardy

Hi @B3 Could you dig up and pot them up to try and give them some shelter? I’ve never grown Gazanias myself but have a few that I believed to have been annuals and have had some growth coming through.

Some of them are over a foot across! So that's not really practical @gardenman91 but thanks for the suggestion. I did divide a few a couple of years ago. They must've survived as there's a lot more dotted about than I remember planting🤔

  • I woud leave them alone, wait until the warmer weather comes in. Then trim back obvious dead parts and see what you are left with. probably not a great deal as they do not like cold and wet conditions.
