Rose ideas for a specific location please šŸ„€

Hello All,

As the rain beats down on the roof above me, I’m gazing out at my garden and wondering what rose I could justify buying, to fill a very specific place...

West facing, southerly tilt, wall of new extension but over the bifold doors and window and could turn the corner of same extension into the side passage.

The wall is exposed brick and also rendered brick around the side.

I’d like to use strong wires to support the rose, as the area to be covered is about 5m across one wall and 2 the other side, with about 1m in height.

I’d love a Banksian rose, but I fear that at 12 odd meters plus, it may need restraining too much which would hamper its flowering.

Something almost evergreen would be lovely, to give a backdrop to a possible jasmine clotted cream or a honeysuckle, later in the season.

I love all shades of yellow, blush, apricot, cream, dark pinks, but not keen on reds.

THANKS ALL šŸ™šŸ»

I’d also love to hear about the rose nurseries you use and would recommend, as I have only ever bought direct from my local garden centre or from DA roses. Thanks.

You might find a friend in @mr.@Mr. Vine Eye based on that criterion šŸ˜‰Ā

I don’t think there any roses that are ā€˜evergreen’ - if you don’t get much response here you could try posting in the Rose Season 2021 thread.. there are lots of very experienced rose enthusiasts there who can help you with ideas.. I only grow shrub roses so I don’t know much about climbers.Ā

Have a look at Alberic Barbier and see if it would suit?

I have Blush Noisette on a corner of my pergola. It is almost evergreen and flowered continuously from June to December. I find it to be healthy and vigorous, the pergola is 8ft tall and wide and it has reached the next corner in both directions ie 16ft spread.
It's not the tidiest of growers so doesn't appeal to everyone but it fits into my somewhat casual style!Ā

Squeezing them in - I like your style šŸ˜€
  • First couple that spring to mind would be Ghislaine de FĆ©ligonde and Cornelia. I also think you could have a look at Open Arms and I seem to have read somewhere that the David Austin rose ā€˜Tottering by Gently’ can be grown on a wall as a low climber... but I may be imagining this? Anyway this is also to say that a neighbour of mine has the yellow Banksian rose kept to a fairly modest side on a side wall and support. So it might be possible to do as you originally hoped...
