Coastal Privacy hedge

Afternoon all,

I’ve recently moved home and wish to plant new privacy hedging but I’d like some advice from people more knowledgable than myself.

Location/Terrain

  • The North (Coastal but not right on the seafront)

Needs:
  • Evergreen
  • Dense foliage
  • Growth rate - slow/medium (Trimming 1-2 times per year)
  • Height required - 6ft (must) to 8ft (nice to have)
I will be purchasing ‘instant’ hedges (which usually start at about 1m - 1.4m).

I’ve ruled out Leylandii (can’t stand the stuff). I do love box hedging but with blight and the harsh (relatively speaking) conditions I have looked into other options, the current leader is Portuguese Laurel.

Open to suggestions

Thank you

    Some ideas could be:

    - viburnums (different types, some evergreen, flowering, some scented, tough as old boots

    - camellias (unless you’re east facing which they don’t like)

    - pittosporum (some lovely silver leaved varieties too, like Silver Queen)

You could combine several varieties and form a flowering hedge too, for added interest.

How about Griselinia littoralis? Good evergreen for coastal sites:

Eleagnus ebbingei is also nice, but might grow too fast.

Thank you all for your replies. Some things I’d seen before but a few new interesting suggestions. Griselinia was one of my other considerations but I’d lost the name of it  :D

I think it’s between that and the Portuguese Laurel. Does anyone know what their root systems are like - Leylandii (random example) is meant to have quite an aggressive far reaching root system?
