Ha, I was going to suggest Dahlias, because they flower for such a long time and you can take them with you. (And are cheap to buy as tubers). Why are you ruling them out? There's such a lot of variety in Dahlias...

Salvia 'Amistad' would be another suggestion. Maybe you could try some Tagetes, not the dwarf kind, big ones like Tagetes 'Cinnabar' etc. I grew that from seed last year, loved it. Was still going right into October.

@Loxley beat me to suggesting Salvia amistad.
Annual Cosmos will make substantail plants covered in flowers too. Fast , easy germination and about 1m tall.

    Devon.

We have a winner, cosmos! Of course, totally forgot about them. Haven't grown them before and have wanted to for a while.

Cheers for the other suggestions but already have 4 salvias so this will be good to get something brand new. Which variety is the next question.

On the dahlia front, I put loads in pots each year anyway.

IMHO, you can't beat Cosmos Purity.

I've gone with Xanthos and Purity from Chiltern.

I've got a packet of Xanthos. Trouble is I've run out of room to either grow it on, or plant it out!

Are they pretty easy to grow from seed I take it?

@Dirty Harry yes they are easy to grow but can be late flowering
