Weedkilling and relaying lawn

Hi we have about 500sqm of uneven, stoney, weedy ground which we would like to relay with grass seed. I have read that it is best to get rid of all grass and weeds before doing anything else. What are the best weedkillers ? I have read vinegar salt and washing up liquid is good. Any other tips?

Vinegar, salt and washing up liquid will kill most of the creatures living in your soil, but not the grass or weeds. If your ground is uneven I think you would be better to remove the turf from the surface, then you can pick up larger stones and level the soil.
  • Thanks Posy, do you have experience of using the mechanised turf removers? The stones/rocks (some are fist sized) are also below the surface so i wonder how effective a turf remover would be.

I'm afraid I haven't. Economically,  I'm  in the blood, sweat and tears school of gardening. I love it, though!
  • Well if you fancy a trip to the French alps to do some digging let me know :)

See if you can borrow some pigs.  They'll clear the weeds and grass for you in no time and turn over the top of the soil making it easier for you to go round with a machine or a rake levelling the ground and removing stones.  I very much doubt a turf cutter would do the job as well or without damage to itself.

We have a potager, 29m x 25m, which is enclosed and was used as a donkey pasture so very lumpy, bumpy and weedy.  I got OH to strim off what he could, sprayed the new growth with glyphosate - still available here in early 2017 - and then a man from a local landscaper came with a small tractor and a small plough and turned it all over then harrowed it.   Worked for us.
