I have an old A4 diary that I use. Put the year in and note daily, or as often as I remember, what I have noticed in flower or gone over. And when I see recommendations for pruning, trimming, splitting etc. something I know I have I also put that in, so for instance now it's time to prune my spirea.
My own method will no doubt be deemed "over the top" by fellow gardeners. I keep (on my website) a garden plan where the exact position of each plant (or group of plants) is referenced. And each plant has its own record with photos, habit, etc. and a record of its "history" in my garden. All of this in French and in English, except for the "history" part which is in French only.
Made some drawings of the garden area before planting where I planned out where the plants I wanted initially could go and followed that up last year by making a similar drawing of what is currently planted as I did not stick exactly to the original plan. I leave my phone logged into my youtube.com channel so I can video what is starting to flower or other things in the garden I feel like taking note of and found it is a handy way to keep track of how the garden is developing.
@Papi Jo and @robairdmacraignil You have very impressive systems! I was thinking something like a notebook although a nice scaled drawing would be good.
