T'was on a Friday morning that the Gasman came to call!

Here at Sporophyte mansions we've been Brit Gas Homeserve customers for years, I thought the £30 odd a month was a bit steep but better than chilly Mrs S nagging about the heating going off - as it did over one Christmas!
We get a call once a year when a guy comes out to vacuum the boiler ( I used to fit the things way back and know damned well that they do precious little else) Even with Covid being an excuse for everything going to pot we still had the call for a week ago.
Now I've caught the odd niff of gas especially first thing in the morning so I said to mention it as l was off to the plot. About an hour later Mrs S rang my mobile in panic mode - the boiler bloke had smelt the gas too, said that he couldn't look for leaks and wasn't a qualified gasfitter - he'd shut the gas off and left.
Have you ever tried to contact Brit Gas? They have no visitable addresses on their letters or bills, no email and the phone number has ten million menu choices and is never answered!
I thought that Penguin in their adverts had thousands of service folk - most of them female by the looks of it - waiting chomping at the bit to rush out. Are they ********!
The disappeared "boilerman" said that someone else would attend later - no one came - no one phoned. Luckily I have a good stock of lecky heaters so Mrs S was placated - for a while.
Tried umpteen times to get them Saturday - their website didn't recognise me.
In frustration, I called an emergency leak number - guys from Cadent were here within an hour and scanning with sniffing machines - then the hole digging crew turned up - and stayed till 01.00 Sunday morning, with Mrs S making them bacon sarnies. What a difference! They were kind, sympathetic, knowledgeable - scathing of our treatment etc., etc, I think Mrs S would really like to adopt at least one of the "oh young man" but even when all was done = no gas. "Boilerman" had spiked our smart meter! Clever work by Mrs S found his mobile and kept ringing till he came back to unspike. Three and a half days with no heating! Our drive looks like the Somme and a large hole in the road means an obstacle course to get in and out and no where to put our vehicles. Two blokes came out and filled in two holes today, sat in their van for tow hours and disappeared leaving the big one in the road with even more barriers.

After all that I would be inclined to stop paying British Gas the £30 a month and just get a qualified Gas Engineer to do a yearly service, mine costs around £65.
Keep putting the £30 a month in a special account (or under the mattress) and if and when you need a new boiler etc you have a tidy sum put aside!

We’ve always had very good service with British Gas. We did try using a local engineer for services when we came here, but after a couple of years we reverted to British Gas. More reliable and easier to get hold of.

We always communicate with them online so have an online account set up ... currently we have a water pressure problem with our elderly  boiler ... still working but it needs sorting ... I went onto the British Gas website, requested an engineers visit, gave a description of the problem, received a list of times and dates and made our choice ... Thursday between 8-1.
We then received an email requesting more info about the problem which we’ve provided. All very straightforward so far 🤞 Whether the old boiler is repairable is another matter ...

I'm really sorry you had such a bad experience. We have had excellent service from British Gas; they kept our old system going until it was nearly antique, replaced it efficiently when it was beyond repair and maintain the new one. They turn out out promptly, stay till the job is done and leave no mess. When we have our annual check they sometimes check all the radiators and do a thorough job on the boiler.

We used the home care thing for years until the boiler finally got so old that they couldn't find parts for it. At that point we switched to just finding independent repair people. The first one was terrible but the second one is fabulous. Eventually got a new boiler.

I pay a small fortune for a repair contract with British Gas but they've not let me down. On Sunday the central heating was working but the hot water system was playing up. I went online close to midnight on Sunday to schedule a visit and on Tuesday morning the problem was fixed.

Our latest complaint  with  B S Don't care (5 weeks and 5 days to fix a fridge freezer)  is now being handled by the Ombudsman.
Last year they left an overflowing sewage pipe for 4 days before fixing it

I suspect that if the problem necessitated the excavation of his driveway then the problem was not simply or even with his boiler at all!

i remember years ago smelling gas in our front garden as I returned home from work ... I looked around and saw that the estate agents For Sale sign had been erected earlier during the day ... on the pavement surface and in line with the sign was a metal cover with Gas inscribed on it. On the house wall and in line with the metal cover and the For Sale sign was our gas meter.

As I looked at the flower bed where the sign had been hammered in I heard a hissing sound. ⚠️

I rushed inside and phoned Transco as it was then. I was told to vacate the house and tell our immediate neighbours to do the same and to turn off all cookers, fires and not to turn light switches on.   😱

The next thing I knew the police and fire brigade arrived, blocked the road (a major route into the city and it was evening rush hour!) and evacuated the whole street to a nearby shopping centre as thé Transco engineers arrived.   The cafes stayed open late.

By bedtime all was repaired and safe and next day our garden was restored and I had a huge bouquet from the estate agents who sold the house very quickly without charge. Apparently Transco sent them a bill.

  • Dove is dead right - nothing wrong with me boiler - really that was the problem! There was nothing wrong with it and the ever so slight niff of gas took five blokes and a couple of thousand quid's worth of technology to find it and then follow it.
A good few years ago now, our service pipe was sleeved with the familiar yellow plastic ;however; sleeves being what sleeves are - there needs to be a hole to push your arm in and likewise for gas pipes - the old one has to be cut out somewhere and for us it was near the spigot in the road main. The sleeve is a pretty tight fit inside the old iron pipe up to the house but plenty of room for the odd gnat's breath of gas that was leaking from a joint in the road main.
Of course, everyone did the right thing turning off the supply to be on the safe side but the non-communication is unforgivable. I have an online account but every time I use it I usually have to reset the password or some other problem - this time it didn't tell what was wrong but wouldn't let me in.
I've cancelled my contract as luckily it's up for renewal now! Also written a moan asking for compensation.
Checking me records, we've called them three times for breakdowns, they couldn't do two of them but offered to pay - I fixed myself as it was the system not the gas and the third one went on forever, first to get them out, then to get them to do the work "ah now, that's not in your Plan" Oh yes it is! ( it was that time of year) took about seven weeks. So no, enough is enough.

We had central heating put in our last house but one, used British Gas, because we were worried paying a fortune to someone we hadn't heard of.  There was already a back boiler behind the gas fire.    The rads etc he day I was quoted by young lady on phone came and went, they had "forgotten" to order fitting.  The hey delivered rads etc, again several days, nothing.  One rad didn't work, was old it needed bleeding, (Hubby had already done that) not connected properly. Just going out one day, really strange noise from loft, Hubby went up there, water was boiling up and over tank!!  Turned out bloke had left out a copper core plug, which regulates the temp, which was behind the gas fire.  Would NEVER use them for anything.  Have a friend over over 30 years, she had a BG Gold service contract, when she was working would book day off work for service, they never turned up, they were meant to do the service in October, often it was February.  It ook me years to persude her to go elsewhere.  The back boiler service, just involved removing the front and vacuuming the thing out.  Had new boiler here, then Hubby replaced the old rusty HUGE rads each year as we could afford it.
