Over vigorous pond plant

This plant grew awfully quickly in my pond last year and I worry that it might take over. Does anyone know what it is and what sort of spread it tends to achieve?

    Your photo isn't clear enough and as you don't know what it is I assume you didn't plant it or didn't keep the label. 
    There are some pretty rampant grasses only suitable for large ponds, I think it's a grass not an iris.
    Is it planted in the pond or in baskets?

    I'd say if you were alarmed at the growth it made last year, whip it out before it starts again this year.
    Maybe split it and have a chunk is a  basket / pot?

    I don't think there's a limiting size for this kind of plant - they can spread ad-infinitum, once escaped from their container (which they do). That said, I have a yellow flag iris, and a 'bulrush' type thing in my small pond - after a while, they spread too much, but I've found it very easy to hoik them out, throw away the excess, and replant some in a pot.

    It was planted in a pond. Yes it’s a grassy thing, not an iris or I wouldn’t mind it spreading a bit more. I’ll give hacking a load of it off a go this year and see how that goes. Thanks for the answers, Joe
