Callistemon laevis

I've been trying to find out a little bit more about Callistemon laevis, but unfortunately it seems as if there's no (botanical) consensus as to what is the correct scientific name and whether plants labeled as 'Callistemon laevis' are a botanical species or a horticultural variation. It seems as if it has been renamed 'Melaleuca'. I can't find any further information about this species that makes sense. Any ideas?
