Privet Hedge

When we moved to this house nearly two years ago - the privet hedge had been very neglected and growth was all at the top and it was flowering.  We've been cutting it about four times a year in the hope it would fill out - but it seems to be looking worse than ever.  Is there any way of saving it?

  • Now is about the right time to cut privet hard back. I'd give it some fish, blood and bone to help it on its way, as your plants look hungry to me (as much as anything). It should regrow well, though it will take a few years to reach the height you want, and you'll need to give it a clip each year to ensure it remains dense. It looks as if these were just planted and never pruned after that at all.

I would clear around each shrub as grass and weeds.
  • Ok - Thanks for that - we'll get feeding it.  It's a bit strange, it's just a section of the hedge that's like this- the rest is much better - not great, but better.  Thanks again!
