Container plant for a north easterly stairwell

SwedboySwedboy Posts: 394
I'm thinking of getting a plant for the stairwell down to my flat (think Victorian servants entrance). It gets loads of sun in the morning and is very sheltered.

My first thought was a Wisteria Frutescens but I think it might be too big. I'd quite like something scented so perhaps a Honeysuckle or a Daphne in a big container. Any thoughts or recommendations? Have seen some lovely repeat flowering daphnes online

There are some roses that would be happy to climb an eastern wall if sheltered. Rosa Madame Alfred Carrière is very scented. You need a good frame to attach it to. If you want evergreen then you can't go wrong with Osmanthus evergreen, fragrant, unfussy albeit not a striking plant. Flowers are white but tiny. I have one and I am liking it better and better as time goes on. Another very fragrant plant is Sarcococca Confusa (looks a bit like Osmanthus but won't grow very big). It depends at what time of year you want it to flower. I don't know if you can grow wisteria in a pot and you certainly need a sturdy frame for it to climb up. Happy hunting :)

Osmanthus evergreen sounds lovely but it looks like it is quite a big plant. The Stairwell is just over two meters so I think it is going to be too big. I'm already planning to plant a Sarcococca Confusa out there as I have manged to inadvertently root cutting from it when I realised it flowered and put some branches in a vas! I think the rose is going to be too big too. Just read that it is a very tall climber. Not sure that will go down well if it starts rambling all over the street!
