Three years ago a friend gave me an african violet. It had two small flowers on it then, but has not flowered since. It looks very healthy and has been producing new leaves all this time. How can I encourage it to flower?

I have a small shelterd area in my garden where I have some perpetual spinach and rhubarb planted last year which is now sprouting.Can I force the rhubarb with an old plastic dustbin?

Also would like to have a few rows of flowers to cut.It doesn't get sun until the late afternoon.

You can force rhubarb with an old dustbin but as it is already sprouting, you should be able to pick the stems pretty soon without the need to force them if it is an early variety. As your plant is young, go easy on the number of stems you pick.

As for cut flowers grown in a semi-shaded area, trawl the seeds merchants' sites and pick out things that are happy in semi-shade.
