Outdoor plants

Please can someone tell me which tall (ish) pot plants will survive a sea facing, windy south aspect balcony.

  • Height is a bit of a problem--as you'll have spotted, near the sea most plants huddle down and are short to minimise the wind damage. You may struggle with very tall things. It could be worth trying some of the following: Acacia baileyana 'Purpurea', Kerria japonica, Choisya ternata, Aucuba, Salix elaeagnus subsp. angustifolia, or Lavatera (if you can get a large enough container). Among roses, you could try 'Bengal Crimson'. 'Dunwich Rose' is one that was found on sand dunes in Surrey! But it's only once-flowering. Coming down in size, rosemary, lavender and cistus all live in such conditions; dwarf white-striped bamboo would also be a good bet. They will all need adequate feeding and watering to thrive.
  • Thank you Cambridgerose12, that’s given me some things to consider, I tried a nice little bay tree for a little bit of height but it has died as I guess the wind damage to it was too great!
