Pointing a wall with wall ferns

Hello all. I have a question. The wall in my garden is in serious need of re-pointing. The cold weather has pulled lots of the pointing from between the stones, leaving behind a crumbly, Sandy Mortar which looks like it will easily wash away.

the problem is, I have some lovely wall ferns growing there and I really don’t want to disturb them as they’re lovely.

what can I do to fix the issue without ruining the aesthetic and killing the plants?

thanks in advance, Jonny.

  • A couple of thoughts - you could put plastic bags over the ferns whilst repointing. The old pointing looks like it has failed because it is cement pointing over lime mortar. Better to repoint with something like NHL2 Hydraulic lime (not hydrated!) Don't be tempted to add any cement.
  • Thanks Stephen, I’ll try to protect the plants as best I can. I just hope the lime doesn’t damage them from the roots.
    thanks
