Growing a Plum Tree in a container

Hi, I’m a fairly novice gardner.  After cutting back a large willow in my quite small garden, into a more manageable size, I now have a large sunny space at the back of the garden.  Ideally I’d like to plant a dwarf cherry and apple tree there and wondered if containers are the way.  The rest of the space is pebbled with pots so it would fit but do they grow well?  I would like fruit from them but don’t want them to take over the space like the very lovely willow did! Any advice very gratefully received

  • Thank you, that’s really helpful and the apple tree looks fab.  Can I ask what size pot that is.  I’m hoping to order fairly soon as that space needs filling lol.

  • I have seen advertised in a catalogue (Pomona Fruits) Sibleys Patio Victoria Plum grafted on to VVA1 dwarfing root stock. Currently thinking about one of these myself.
    Hope this helps

Plum trees, no. They don’t yet grow them on dwarf rootstocks.
I have a Victoria plum, Czar plum and old greengage on pixy rootstock growing in raised beds. Admittedly they are open bottomed raised beds but whilst researching what to get, I did see somewhere that plums on pixy rootstock can be grown in containers. I believe they have to be at least 24 inch pots.
  • Thanks everyone, the news on plum in containers makes me happy.  Especially as I’ll be able to reach the fruit 🍎
