Can anyone help with my Hebe.

Hi all,

Last few weeks my Hebe has begin turning brown which is getting progressively worse. Is there anything I can do to help recover it?

Any help appreciated!

  • Hi Ryan, is this the first time it has turned brown this excessively? What type of soil is it growing in?
  • It was only planted last March. Did really well in summer, it's only the last few weeks this has happened - could it be connected to cold weather we've had recently.

Soil was originally quite heavy with clay but we took a lot of the top stuff off and worked in some manure etc, but probably still a bit on the clay side.

Could be frost and wind damage not all hebes are hardy.
I would just leave it until late Mach and see If there are any new leaves showing then you can cut it back to the fresh growth.
If it survives just put some fleece over it when frost is forecast.
  • Thanks, was particularly cold a few weeks back so wouldn't surprise me if it's the frost!

They do seem to prefer a very free draining soil and warmth. They dont seem to survive hard frosts very well. I have a rather clayish soil and I've had no luck with them here.

Hope it improves with care  :)
  • I agree with the comment about clay soil, not sure they’d like that much moisture. Come spring, you could try taking a few cuttings and try growing it in a large container?

Frost. NZ plant, only good in SW England, except in a mild winter
Everyone likes butterflies. Nobody likes caterpillars.
  • I have one than I cut right back seeing as I had nothing to lose, it was either dead or it might regrow - it grew!
