Bamboo pot spacing

Hello,

I want to put some bamboo screening up as a screen from my neighbours. I have chosen  Fagesia Muriela.

My fence is 3.5 m long and my pots are 50cm cube.  My question is, do I need 2 or 3 pots.  3 would mean the pots are 50cm apart and 2 would mean they are about 70cm apart (assuming they are evenly spaced from the ends).

Would appreciate some advice.

Thanks.

Sorry, but I would not try growing this in a pot.  Each plant will want to grow and spread over a a metre wide at the base as well as grow tall and squished into a 50cm pot will mean they are constantly thirsty and hungry and possibly stunted and also wanting to escape.

You'd be better off either with different plants or, instead of pots, spend the money on some timber to make one single container, 2m long and 60cm wide and deep and then lined with black compost or old compost bags stapled just under the rim to hide their edges whilst protecting the timber from moisture in the compost.   It would require a lot of compost and regular watering and feeding but you'd have happier plants.

  • Thank you @Obelixx
In your 2m planter, how many plants should I sow?

4, I reckon or maybe 3 depending on what size you buy.

I'd be tempted to buy 2 good plants and split them to make 4.  Take them out of their pots, water well, split in two with two forks back to back or cut in two with an old bread knife and re-plant straight away.  Water well and make sure they don't dry out.  Use a good, loam based compost to fill the container, maybe with 25% MPC for moisture retention..
