Choice Shrubs for Slope

Hi
Looking for your thoughts on best option for shrubs on a slope between a hedge and a conifer. Also near steps to path which leads to house.
Measures 1 metre in length. Attached photos
Thanks
Peter

I would be inclined to have a new bit of fencing to fill in the gap as I think you will struggle to establish  any shrub so near to the  conifer.  Do you need to keep it?

Thanks for response.Yes conifer has to stay and it might be more of a challenge to continue the fence on the slope.

You have a picket type fence so it's easy on a slope as you can attached the boards, run a string from top to bottom and cut them of with a jig saw

I have a problematic sloping front garden which is very dry and has thin soil. I can get Hypericum Hidcote, various Euonymus  and Choisya (Aztec Pearl I think) to grow anywhere on the slope, sunny or shady. Not that choice maybe but worth a go. How about digging a hole and seeing how rooty the area actually is?

Just thought maybe Sarcococca might be ok, would smell lovely there in winter.
