old and overgrown Cotoneaster Rothschildianus
Hi, I have a huge very old Cotoneaster Rothschildianus (I think - willow leafed, yellow berry) that needs cutting back as it is simply too big - growing outwards all the time. However, the lovely arching stems do not seem to grow from very far into the plant before it becomes hollow and woody. Does anyone know if it can be rejuvenated safely?
Also this winter the ends of many stems have been breaking off - it is much used by birds but I wouldn't have thought they were strong enough!
Would appreciate any help on this one.

You could cut it back over the course of the next 3 years by removing 1/3 of the oldest stems now and the same over the next 2 winters
