Is this a hellebore please?

Hi All,

I have the feeling I planted this and forgot about it.  I think it is a hellebore but it lives in almost the darkest area of the garden.  North facing and right up against a garage wall.  If it is, and I think helle refers to the sun, should I move it?

Thanks

Bob

Yes. The two leaves lying flat on the floor can be trimmed off now. It will send up more fresh leaves soon.  It would probably benefit from being a bit nearer the front of the border(you will see it better as it grows bigger.  Dig the whole plant up with plenty of soil around it, and plonk it into a prepared hole with a bit of general fertiliser.  Water in well.
  • They grow at woodland edges so they do not mind quite a lot of shade, only deep shade would be a problem. Mine grow against the north wall of my house but they do well.

Yes, I have some that have self seeded into very deep shade and they love it.
  • Thanks very much for all the comments.  Given the problems of growing something nice in this spot I think I shall leave it and see what happens.  Cheers all - happy times are coming - I mean the spring not un-lockdown!!
