Pyracantha and kids/dogs

Hi guys

I'm on the brink of growing a pyracantha on a North facing fence but know they are particularly thorny and that gave me pause for thought.

They will be at the back of the border but could they be unsafe for a curious toddler or dog?  Anyone speak from experience?

Thanks all

You can explain to the toddler not to walk or play on flower beds or touch the thorns or eat the berries and the dog will either keep away or learn fast enough.  We have never had any problems with our daughter - now 26 - or our two dogs now 14 and 12.

Pyracantha is a wonderful plant for wildlife - shelter and protection for both birds and invertebrates; nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators and then berries for the birds.  Looks good too.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

We have a huge Pyracantha hedge and our puppy has never been bothered by it.  She is too busy digging up our flower beds!
  • Good to know, thanks - mine is only four months so not quite sure what I have in store yet!  We already have hawthorn, holly and mahonia so what's another thorny plant in the mix?!
