Philadelphus dig out or leave?

My belle etoile is 25 years old and the base is a bit of a jumbled mess making the plant very lopsided. I can never seem to prune it to get a good shape. I'm inclined to dig it out and start again.  Would love your thoughts.

    I have a P virginal that was in a similar age and state, so I cut all the stems back to about 1ft and cut out some of the excess stems too.
    It soon sprouted again and is about 8ft now.
    If you like it - give it a go and see how it responds
