Wait till Spring and then give it a trim, ideally immediately after flowering.  It looks better if you can do this selectively with secateurs, rather than using shears or a hedge trimmer.  However we have trimmed ours using shears in the past, just like our Privet hedge and was fine.  You can prune back quite a lot of it, but don't overdo it, or it will look awful for some time.

They are very forgiving and can be pruned as hard as you like and at almost any time (just avoid doing it when frosts are forecast) and will happily grow back.  I pruned one of mine yesterday, but you'll lose flowers if you do it now so it depends on whether you mind that or not. :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • You can use them for topiary, even--so you could shape it any way you like.
  • I agree. Cut them any way and as hard as you like, they will recover and are tough. The harder you prune the longer it looks bare but within a month or so it will be green again but more compact and bushy. The flowers are pretty but not so impressive you'll miss them. I use electric shears and then a final tidy with secateurs.
