Good morning everyone. Couple of questions this morning please.
Firstly, I was recently given an old pot from sadly now deceased neighbours of my parents. I loved the old pot, I think it’s only cement but I was very fond of the couple so it means a lot. Things are now beginning to appear. Any ideas to their identity? I think one is a hosta but not sure of the other.
Also, last summer I found a new love (well, addiction really) of roses. They are predominantly shrub roses. As they are all new, do I need to prune them much this spring? They are all showing signs of good growth already. This is Chandos Beauty .... I bought 4 last summer 😳. I’m very new to roses so any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

From the top: I think you have a speedwell there, a lawn weed, though it's hard to tell. Then there is a definite hosta. These too can be fertilised quite soon. March is a good time. The main thing you want to watch out for is molluscs.
As to mulch, I have just found two nice ones. YouGarden shredded organic horse manure is really good, and I plan to order more. I also like Melcourt composted bark. Often a good place to find mulches is eBay, but Amazon also has a wide choice. It's worth asking around locally, too, as some councils will deliver compost for free, but when mine did this I wasn't quite so happy with the quality--so as I only have a tiny garden, I tend to order mine in bags, then reuse the bags to hold garden waste afterwards.
