Pyracantha problem

Hi,

We have a pyracantha on the front wall of our house which is east facing. Its in a bed under the eaves and has grown there happily for around a decade. This winter, it produced berries but the leaves have got black spots, are falling off and the plant is not far from death.

Ive tried watering it with feed extensively, and tried fungus spray 2-3 times but nothing seems to help.

Ive looked up common problems but would really appreciate advice to help work out what the problem is and what if anything I can do about it.

Thanks.

  • Pyracantha can be affected by a disease called fireblight. The plant can look as though it has been burned - I would say yours does. There is an RHS advice page but other than trying to overcome the problem by pruning, there is no chemical control.  https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=160

There may be someone on the forum who has first-hand experience of this disease. Unfortunately, I don't but fireblight is my best guess.

My first thought was fireblight too ☹️  Pyracantha are particularly susceptible.
  • I would agree with the diagnosis of fireblight. There are some newer, resistant varieties such as the 'Saphyr' range, but I would hesitate to put one back in the same spot.
