Overgrown Rose and Honeysuckle

I would appreciate peoples thoughts on how to tackle a large honeysuckle and rose combination.
I plan to cut the honeysuckle back to 2ft from the ground level to stimulate fresh new growth as most of it is currently at the end of long woody stems.  I am not sure if the rose is a rambler or very large shrub rose but am thinking maybe remove any old stems and reduce the remainder by about a third to a half

    I think you are planning to do the right thing. There is a lot of dead wood to cut off the rose. Even if it is a climber it won't do it any harm to thin it out and shorten it. Once the honeysuckle has been cut down it will be easier to keep it under control and cut the dead wood out.

    Thank you Busy-Lizzie.  You are right, first thing I will be doing is to try and remove the dead, diseased and damaged wood on the rose.  Hopefully with the honeysuckle cut back I will be able to make sense of the rose and train it accordingly.
