Wilting pepper leaves

Please can someone help me. We have some peppers that have been grown from seed. In the propogator they have been growing nicely, but When moved out to a larger pot the leaves are wilting and plant eventually shrinks to nothing.
In the last batch I decided to try and mimic the propogator and cover with cling film, but the same thing is happening. They have plenty of water, so I don’t know what to do next?..

  • Hi and welcome to the forum 😊
Maybe they have too much water?  They shouldn’t need covering after they’ve developed some ‘proper’ leaves.
Although in many ways the growing of tomatoes and peppers is similar, peppers need a slightly drier compost ... could that be the problem?

  • Thank you for that. I did think this, but this time have only really been watering from below. It just seems when they get fresh air outside of propogator they don’t like it. Is it not also strange that they start wilting from the top down?
  • Where are they? Do you have a heated greenhouse?
I would’ve thought windowsills are too cold for peppers at the moment.

  • I have them on windowsill which has a rad underneath it, so it’s warm. The ones in the propogator are thriving there
  • I think you may be leaving them in the propagator for too long.  The seed trays or pots need to come out of the propagator as soon as they have germinated and then grown-on at lower temperatures.  Because of that, I sow in small modules so that it's easy to take out those which have germinated, leaving the rest in.

  • Thanks Bob. I fear I may lose all of these if that is the case 😩

You could try a sort of hardening-off process by potting on, but placing back in the prop. for a much of the first few days and bring out onto the windowsill (with a bag to prevent your CH drying them out) for a few hours each day.  Decrease the number of hours in the prop. every day until they can stand on the windowsill full-time.  You'll then need to slowly ease them out of being covered by the plastic bag in a similar way.  Fingers crossed! :)
