Weird bone thing in field

Hi, any idea what this is? We found it in a field we were working on.

Deer antler, probably from one year old roe buck.
  • Wow thanks! That's great to know.

    As steephill said.
I remember many years ago a similarly aged single antler was found on the shores of Loch Ness. A few people were convinced it was proof of Nessie!
  • That's funny!!  My husband thought he'd found proof of a wild cat or something similar in Essex ! But it being a roe deer antler is very exciting, makes sense with the local woodland around the field.
  • That's some find, @Allotmentpixie : I'd hang on to it & smooth off the bulbous end for comfort & then use it as a 'dibber' for large seeds & bulbs!!

  • Thanks for the suggestion, great idea.
  • Given its size, it could be a muntjac antler.

I was tempted to suggest unicorn :D Muntjac have curved antlers which are slimmer than roe with a narrower basal plate. I have found a couple of antlers in the garden over the years from our semi-resident roe, will post a photo later.

Not quite the 12 point Monarch of the Glen but big enough for a roe buck.
