Lavender

Hi everyone!
I have a few lavenders i grew from seed last year. They were looking lovely in summer. I wrapped them in fleece for winter. I unwrapped them the other day to check them and think I may have killed them. I thought I wasn't meant to water over winter but they were dry and don't look good. I've attached pictures. Are these salvageable? Many thanks

English lavenders are hardy in the ground most winters as long as they are well drained but, clearly, in pots they are more susceptible to being frozen and killed.  It should be enough to protect the pots without smothering the plants which are evergreen and need at least some sun and water in winter.

I suspect these will recover if you can get them watered, left to drain and then stashed in a sunny, sheltered spot till you can get them planted out in a sunny, well-draine spot in the garden.

  • This looks pretty bad. You should not have wrapped them.  They have rotted. Many lavenders are hardy in Britain, esp. Lavanda angustifolia. French lavender is not hardy, except on the south coast and will rot.

  • That's a shame. Think i may just put them in a pot outside for spring and see what happens. Will know for next year! Thanks everyone

There's lots of new growth starting low down, so maybe cut back to that, give them a water and keep somewhere warm like Obelixx said above.

At least you got Augustifolia seedlings. I grew about 30 lavender plants at my allotment last year that were from a Lavender Hidcote seed packet...they all turned out to be French!

I think they will be fine with a bit of tlc. As mentioned, there is new growth.
  • Oh no! I have French lavender too but they are really young. I have unwrapped them now, given a water and they are in the green house which with the sun out has been bright and hitting 30-40°C at points so will see what spring brings! Thank you all x
