Wood Chippings Advice

In the Autumn, we cleared a large border by the drive and had conifers cut down which were causing an issue. I kept all the wood chippings from the tree surgeon and spread them over the area so it looked a bit tidier for the winter and to try to suppress the many, many brambles and weeds in that area.

I'm starting to think about planting for the Spring and wanted to check what I should do with the wood chippings.  Can I just scrape back the areas where I'm going to plant and leave everything else there to eventually rot down, dealing with any brambles/weeds as and when they when they pop into sight?  The wood chippings are at least 5 inches deep.

  • I don't see why that wouldn't work, but do keep the chippings away from the base of the stems/trunks of shrubs/trees etc. after planting (this applies to any kind of mulch) as it can cause them to rot.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks Bob.  I'll make sure to scrape the chippings back well away from the planting
