Planting next to a mature laurel hedge

I have a blank canvass of a garden and want to plant a herbaceous border next to a mature laurel hedge as it faces south westerly. Im concerned about the root system of the hedge and what would be a reasonable distance away to begin planting my border.

At least a metre so either leave a grass path to be mowed along the hedge or lay down a strip of weed proofing membrane edged with wood to hold in gravel or chipped bark then make your new bed in front of that.

The minimum would be enough so you can get in to cut the hedge and pick up the clippings without treading on the plants. Maybe 2 feet? You could put down a path of coarse bark chippings to walk on and mimimise weeds.
