liquid fertiliser?

I planted some peas and garlic through autumn and with the recent snow we’ve had these last couple of weeks up north ive noticed they’ve all started to wilt or look a bit worse for wear. Would it be okay to give them a bit of a liquid feed or should i just leave them?

Leave them.  It's the cold that's wilting them so just let them thaw all by themselves.    When it's much warmer and no frost is forecast you can, if you like, scatter some pelleted chicken manure or similar on your beds and the rains will wash it in and down to their roots for you.

  • I'd say that, while it won't do any harm, they just look like that because it's winter and rather cold, rather than needing anything. Feed is only any use when the plants are actively growing, whereas these are probably in 'slow-motion' for the time being.

There have been a few threads with people worrying because perfectly hardy plants look bad in the frost, but that's just how many types of plant look (e.g. looking at flopped leaves on my Bergenia, and frosted flowers on the Viburnum).
  • Absolutely,  wait until they are growing strongly again.  A bit of feed later will help as the amount of rain this winter may have caused some nutrients to be leached out.
