Please help me save my Yucca

I fear it is to late but I thought I’d try in hope that it isn’t the end. This yucca was my grandparents and I’d really love to keep it alive but as you can see from the photos I fear it’s doubtful. He’s very old now, but there are some green leaves... so maybe there is hope? All help welcome, I’m not the best at keeping plants alive.

Further info... i live in the U.K, it’s kept indoors, normally in my conservatory but I moved it to the lounge last week (in hope that if it was a bit warmer it would be happy) I rarely water it as I was told not to water it much, it is lop sided (the lizard is actually keeping it upright) ... hope that helps.

A few yucca leaves turning brown is normal but wow, this is not. Some browning is ok when the browning leaves are the oldest and closest to the ground, not when almost all are brown. In this case, you’ve got a different problem than plant aging and we need more information to figure out why this happened, when the problem started, how to fix it, etc.

Yuccas normally like bright light. I grew them outside in the Caribbean in almost full sun but indoor yuccas do not tolerate much direct sun when grown indoors by a window. So if you have it indoors, make sure it gets indirect bright light. If the spot in the picture is where you keep, it, that may be ok as the white paint will reflect towards the plant sometimes.

If it was being watered too much, it may have developed root rot. The roots should be firm and white or cream colored, not black or squishy or smelly. If this is the problem, you can cut away the bad roots, repot and see if it stabilizes and comes back in Spring. Or not. If you forgot to water it, try to water when the top 6 cms or so feel dry. Depending on many factors, that equates at watering every 10 through 14 days. More or less. ;o))

  • I’m sorry to say that I think your plant is unlikely to survive—the way the tips are wilting and brown makes it look as if it’s succumbed to a rot that’s spread right through the plant. Probably it has been overwatered during the winter: they should be given next to no water between October and March while the plant is not in active growth. Also it is in a pot that’s far too small for such a big plant, so it can’t be getting enough nourishment.

It is hard to tell because the leaves are so shrivelled, but also it doesn’t look like a yucca to me, I’d have guessed Dracaena or something like that.

I'm sorry but I think it's had it. I also think that @Cambridgerose12 is right, it's a Dracaena rather than a Yucca.

  • Thank you for your replies. I have been keeping it in the conservatory so yes maybe too much direct light. I think I will try repotting it and give it through spring and see if it can return from the edge of death! I’m a far from green fingered individual.
