Family apple tree pruning advice

Hi all, my first post here!

I was wondering if I might seek some advice on pruning a small family apple tree? I’ve searched online but struggling to find anything specific to family trees.

My tree has two varieties, James Grieve on Cox’s Orange Pippin, on a very dwarfing rootstock.

The upper variety (James G) has proven more vigorous than the lower (Cox’s) and I am keen to find a strategy to equalise this.

I’m aware generally that firmer pruning causes stronger subsequent growth, but in a plant with multiple varieties, does that benefit get shared equally if you only prune one variety?

If I prune the James G hard, can I expect the Cox’s to grow better? Or should I prune Cox’s firmly because that is where I want the benefit to come?

The tree lives on my balcony in a large pot, I’ve so far been allowing one branch of the Cox’s variety to grow rather freely so it gets stronger (on right of image below) - I expect I’ll prune that this year in any case.

Thoughts and advice appreciated 🙂

  • I would prune the Cox's quite hard now (well, after these hard frosts pass), which will encourage growth on that variety and summer-prune the James Grieve which will help to restrict it.  It may take several years of doing that to get a good balance.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Hi Bob. That makes sense, thanks!
