Can I ask, do people leave the spring bulbs in the pots over winter or lift them?

I have seen some amazing displays. I feel that if I put spring bulbs in my pots I wouldn't be able to use them in the summer.

    Am I missing something?
  • I think people do a mixture of things @Ditsy depending on the availability of pots. I swap the positions of some of my pots around and put the spring ones out of sight to die back. Some of my more favourite pots I just put summer bedding plants on top, adding some extra compost. I have also completely lifted bulbs in the past, leaves and everything and let them die back in a box and stored in newspaper until planting time. I think the most important thing is to let all those leaves die back to ensure you get healthy blooms next year.

What some people do is grow them in a plastic pot that sits inside a decorative pot. Then the plastic pot can be put away out of sight for the leaves to die down, leaving the decorative pot free to be planted with something else right away.

P.S. The decorative pot should have drainage holes

With bulbs in pots it's really important to label what's in there, esp as summer bedding might go on top. (Mental note to self).
  • That is a really good idea @Athelas, I must remember that in September/October and to label them @Fire, I do so desperately try.

I always plant my displays in plastic pots and put them inside terracota or ceramic pots.  The summer pots get moved out and emptied in late summer/autumn and then I have a winter display and then I put a spring display in.  On some of the pots I use slightly smaller plastic ones and plant an ivy inbetween the plastic and ceramic, this can then stay in through all the seasons.  It makes them lighter and easier to move if I need to.
