Obelisk - inside or outside
I have recently got a clematis so once its established I will need to transplant it.
i have my metal obelisk ready but does the plant go inside the obelisk or outside? Part of me says inside it so it can grow around it, but the other part says that will make it harder to get to for pruning etc if required. Ive had a google at images and cant see if the plants are inside or outside the structure
its a group 3 so will need to be cut back every year.
over to the experts 🙂

Group 1 only get pruned after flowering to tidy up and keep them in bounds and, when older, renew vigour by cutting out the oldest stems at the base.
Group 2s make their first flush of flowers on old wood so you just prune back after that first flush to keep them tidy, dead head and take out wayward stems. Then you fee them well and they should produce a second flush in late summer.
For these two groups it makes no odds whether you plant inside or outside the obelisk.
Group 3s get pruned back hard in March and then fed and they then produce a hole new set of stems that flower in summer so, for these, you need to be able to get to their base and also be prepared to train in all the new stems so they climb round your obelisk.
