Elephant Garlic Question

Just a quick question to all you garlic experts out there.  I am looking at planting elephant garlic in September in a bed where I had previously grown lettuce.  I notice that lots of gardening suppliers are selling elephant garlic now.  Will it be ok if buy it now and if so how should I store it, or do I wait before ordering and risk not being able to get what I want. Sorry if this is a daft question but I've never grown veg before.

@Yviestevie I'm not a garlic expert but I bought mine last year with ease, lots of choice to be had from lots of outlets. Actually noticed that mine have broken cover in the last few days, they've had quite a shock with all this snow

@Yviestevie I think you should wait until the Autumn and buy it then. It needs larger spacing between the cloves and slightly deeper than the ordinary type, oh yes and they don't like waterlogged soil! Hope this helps.

It won't keep until the autumn - even with careful storage the cloves would rot. I've grown it for about 10 years and not yet had a problem sourcing it in the autumn.

  • I agree ... buy in Sept ... it’ll be fresh stock harvested that summer. Much better 👍

Thanks for all your help.  Believe me a lot more questions about veg growing will be posted over the next few months.
