Japanese acers

Help! I am currently selecting a Japanese maple for my garden and information on websites varies greatly- I am talking here about Acer shirasawanum ‘Aureum’ - some sites make it 2Mx 2M large some 5x4 some even go as far as 8x4 ... would someone be able to clarify this for me? Much appreciated x

  • You find that a lot. RHS says that it's eventual size is between 4-8 meters and will reach maturity between 20-50 years....which means they have no idea.

Even if it did get big, with the rate Japanese Maples grow, I doubt you'd ever see it reach an imposing size.

My nan planted a different variant 20 years ago and it's 3x2.

    I've got one.
I planted it some 30 yrs ago.
It was in the shade (25ft ish away) of a huge eucalyptus for most of its life where it was protected from full sun and it looked great, but grew slowly.
I had the eucalyptus removed and since then the leaves get badly scorched in the summer sun and winds from the south west. It's also in quite a dry part of the garden. Several branches have died back by a few feet since the photo was taken. I don't have any more recent pics.
It is a lovely tree, but you can see by the delicate almost lime green young foliage it won't like a lot of sun, but if you have a sheltered place for one and your soil isn't too alkaline go for it, it's a beautiful tree.

  • Thank you both very much! Great help- yes I think my garden will be great for it, just wish it wasn’t THAT slow but never mind! Lovely tree!!

I'm sure it was the position it was in that caused slow growth.
A 100ft eucalyptus is a lot of competition for a little acer (even though they were planted around the same time!)

I planted and acer palmatum dissectum in the front garden also at the same time to give you an idea of possible growth
Just as dawn broke on a sunny November morning last year the colour in the dawn light was amazing

  • Beautiful!!! I just love Japanese maples! I have a shishio on my list alongside the above mentioned aureum but wish I had a space for many more:)

Unfortunately different sources will give size information for different ages.  I've seen 'mature size' which is utterly meaningless.  I'm nearly 70 and have been accused of being immature at times :-)  Also seen 5 and 10 years used.
