Is this plant dead or still alive?

Hi all!

I wondered, is this plant dead?

It used to look like the one next to it.

I wondered if perhaps there was some hope that it would come back in spring?

What are your thoughts

    Im not sure whats caused it to get burnt out like that...could it be that the soil is too rich? Its from manure but i was assured its been sitting over a year and so would be okay to use as soil in raised beds. Its not the first of my plants to wither in this way with this soil. Though whats confusing is that the identical plant with it hasnt reacted in the same way.

    Grateful if someone could shed some light as this is only my first year gardening.

    Is it a chrysanthemum? That's quite the dramatic colour change..

    @Marwaneldallal Did you mean it used to be green? Or just that it had lots of foliage like the other one.
    I was thinking physocarpus 'diabolo'.

    Is there a baby underneath it!! Have you tried scraping off a bit from the stem see if it's green underneath.A huge ammount of plants have their folliage change colour in autumn before falling off.Definitely not a chrysanth

    I took a cutting and it was hollow towards the top through further down i see some indication of life.

    No its not a goosebury its an african marigold me thinks.

    Should i prune it down half way?
